Band Member Bios
_ (Alto, Bari Sax) has played with many different ensembles in venues ranging from the hold of a Liberty Ship to a bus maintenance garage, and many other “normal” locations around Southern California. In addition to performing with Shake and the Chantoosies, he has been a member of both the Evening Wind Symphony and the City Jazz Big Band at Long Beach City College for 20 plus years.
_ Laila Bridges
_ (Tenor Sax) has an Associate’s Degree in music, a Master’s Degree in Linguistics and serves the community as a professional educator. She started playing the saxophone in elementary school and has played in a variety of groups including Jolly Al’s Oompah Band and Great American Swing. She has also participated in local community groups such as the Long Beach City College wind ensemble, City Jazz, and saxophone quartet.
_ (Woodwinds, Keys, and Strummed Strings, Vocals) has a Bachelors Degree in music from Cal State Long Beach and has played in many SoCal groups including Kaptain Kula’s Pyrat Party, the Mezzonians (R & B doo wop harmony and Django guitar ) and Jazz Attack. He gives music lessons, arranges music, and works at Dave’s Island Instruments.
_Mary Ann Heimann
_ (Bass) started out in “all-girl” bands (The Thurjers and The Truth About Radio) and graduated to topical musical groups (Resistance, Dialeclectics, and Nuclear Family). She writes songs that provide ironic commentary on modern life, such as, “It Seemed Like a Good Thing at the Time,” “A Little Bit of You Goes a Long Long Way,” and I Never Do This, But...”
_ Ted Murdock
_ (Trumpet) played with the Ray Charles Show as a featured jazz trumpet soloist. He was also responsible for arranging music for the Ray Charles "Big" Band and the Ray Charles 40 piece Symphonic Orchestra. He has also worked with Latin jazz and salsa bands at various clubs in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas-La Nueva Dimension, Ed Jones y La Familia, Los Costeños Band, and Johnny Martinez-and with RUFUS featuring Chaka Kahn.
(Guitar) is our newest band member. Milo studied Jazz Guitar and Ethnomusicology at UCLA, and he teaches guitar when he is not performing with local bands or on cruise ships. Emiliano believes, as his idol, Jimi Hendrix once said, "when the power of love exceeds the love of power, only then will the world know peace..."
_ Shelley RuggThorp
_ (Vocals) is a visual and performance artist who has always wanted to sing with a band, and Shake and the Chantoosies gave her that opportunity! Performing is in her genes, although she has no formal training as a musician. Her presence on stage, coupled with her deep and sultry singing voice, makes for a delightfully entertaining experience.
_John Wash IV
_ (Drums) is a Long Beach native, and began drumming in middle school, playing in garage bands, and school bands. He attended junior college in Long Beach, studying music and classical percussion. He played in the Knott's Berry Farm Drum Bums for three years during summers. He then began performing and traveling with an Urban Percussion Trio called The Procrastinators, during which time, he attended CalArts where he earned his BFA in multi-focus percussion. While there, he was exposed to the music of Africa, Brazil, and India. Nowadays, John performs and teaches in the Los Angeles area.
